The Challenge

The brief for CinéfestOZ proved to be one of the most exciting community projects Jack in the box have ever undertaken. Jack in the box were required to introduce an iconic regional festival to Busselton’s event calendar, attracting tourism, investment and awareness of the region by wider national and international audiences. The process to create an image and develop a range of marketing collateral, which would attract an affluent audience from metropolitan Perth, other states and eventually reach an international audience, was both exciting and challenging.

The Idea

As a key sponsor, we wanted to develop a brand mark that would stand the test of time. An enduring graphic that would allow for the event to develop a unique look and feel each year yet carry with it a consistent element that tied each festival together seamlessly. And so was born the ribbons of film that form such an integral part of this iconic brand.

The Solution

Our visual solution was to develop a flow, through the use of a cleverly crafted film strip which would encompass the syllable ‘OZ’. This was to ensure clear annunciation and to separate the OZ segments of the word as a defining ingredient. We utilised lower case format in the first syllable, ‘cinéfest’ as an understatement – please note the use of the diacritic over the ‘e’ to correctly identify the correct emphasis of the French pronunciation.

The use of colour was also key, providing a splash of patriotism for both Australia and France.

The Last Word

CinéfestOZ has achieved a growing profile since its launch in 2008, premiering several Western Australian and Australian films. In 2011 it approached an attendance of 5000, with a growing support from metropolitan audiences.

Sponsorship also reflects the increasing calibre of the festival, with The West Australian Newspaper, Rio Tinto, Apache Energy, ScreenWest, Events Corp and Royalty for Regions now being major contributors. CinéfestOZ is now the premier Film Festival of WA. In 2015 it is expected to attract an audience exceeding 15,000 visitors.
