Lowdown
When the Shire of Capel came to thebox, construction of the new Dalyellup Library and Youth Hub was well underway.
A project that had been in the plans for many years was finally being brought to life, requiring a visual identity with just as much heart to represent it.
The brief focused on the need to develop a brand that truly reflected the facility, its values and its vision: ‘To be the HEART of the community where all are welcome to learn, create and connect.’
For our crew, this wasn’t just about the creative. It was also about the thinking. As with every project, we invest time in understanding the clients we work with and what sits at the heart of what they’re trying to achieve.
With the DL&YH, that meant understanding the value, opportunities and resources this new precinct would bring to local youth and the wider community. It was about understanding the potential of a space designed to support learning, creativity, wellbeing and community connection, while providing opportunities for young people to learn new skills, access technology and engage in community activities.
From our discovery sessions with the Shire, walking through the site and talking about their hopes and vision for the project, we knew the outcome needed to portray strength, support, community and connection.
Through the use of lines, shapes, weights, space, colour and modern typography, the crew crafted a strong, grounded brandmark supported by a diverse suite of assets. Together, they reflect the heart of the space and the people it was created for. Diversity, connection and togetherness became part of the visual language, creating an identity that could be flexible and playful while remaining distinctly DL&YH.
The flexibility of the identity allowed it to be brought to life throughout the precinct and beyond, from building signage and the website to concepts including custom library cards, staff lanyards, community courtesy vehicles and everyday brand applications.
Ultimately, this was about creating more than an identity for a new building. It meant understanding what the Hub is here to do and considering how we, as a creative business, could continue to support that purpose.
