The Challenge

In 2020, the South West Development Commission began working with thebox on the development of a new website.

With a need to develop a flexible site which could be maintained by internal staff, the site also needed to be much more sophisticated than its predecessor and reposition the Commission as a credible source of information.

Critically, it needed to be simple and easy for various stakeholders across the board to be able to discover information.

The Idea

We began with mapping the site and developing a clear plan for the navigation. Using a mega menu, we were able to provide multiple ways to navigate to the same information.

The site also needed to have a distinct look and feel. More like a news bureau than a tourism site for the region. The design was built around the existing brandmark and incorporated a suite of complementary colours to generate dynamics in the final output.

The Solution

Partnering with our sister agency EUSO Digital for the development, we built a robust site which could withstand the need for constant updating and a wide variety of content.

Big blocks with large photo’s worked with a stacked menu. The mega menu is the hero with it’s multi-level navigation and dynamic feeds, making it a treat to find what you’re looking for.

The Last Word

Creating something visually appealing for a bureaucracy is not always easy but the team at the South West Development Commission allowed us the latitude to really push some boundaries to design and develop a site that has stood the test of time.

We’ve completed a range of other projects for the Commission over the years. One of note is the animation for a grant application. This fun animation was created with a limited brief and a need for a tone of idea generation. The result was an informative and fun way to communicate how the system worked.
