When the iPhone came on the market not only did we now have a means of accessing Facebook 24/7, but we were introduced to the Emoji keyboard. This is not to be confused with ‘Emoticons’ from MSN Messenger circa 1999 which happened to be the way I learnt to type quickly and wasted many hours in a darkened room as a teenager. But it’s the same concept. For anyone that has no idea what they are, take a look at these cute little pictures you can use with or instead of words when messaging or using social media. By downloading the Emoji app, you can have an entire categorised keyboard of them.
Firstly, there are a multitude of faces that can be used to express any mood, the most effective in my opinion, being the wide-eyed and embarrassed or the ghostly shocked face. A kiss with a heart to express adoration is a handy one too. Just using one of these faces by themselves can replace lines of text. You could also add them to an Instagram comment or text message for a more intense and emotional effect!
Other popular ones include a cute puppy, couples holding hands and every kind of food known to man. A birthday cake, Spanish dancer, train, boat or aeroplane and choice of 18 hand gestures are also available at your disposal.
Perhaps the most misunderstood of them all are these cats:
Looking at the social impact of Emoji’s, I’m of the belief that it connects people and helps us to further express what we may need to say in a standard text message. It makes communication with technology fun.
