It began when I couldn’t figure out how to set up my new TV equipment. I should have known it spelt my total disintegration as a handy man. While my young son easily handled the installation I was left bewildered and robbed of my intellectual superiority. The apprentice had become the master.
Have you ever noticed that lighting candles can suddenly set a romantic tone or the aromas of freshly baked bread makes you feel soft and warm inside and even hearing a simple Christmas jingle can change your mood (for some – this might be annoyance, for me – instant happiness!).
Are we eye witnesses to history or is it simply fate which will carry us into oblivion? Driven by my daily observations of environmental impacts, I am inevitably drawn to the conclusion that our reward for our careless stewardship of a precious planet is reminiscent of 79 AD.
Day to day, I try to recycle what I can, purchase biodegradable products where possible and overall try and adopt an ‘experiences over stuff’ mentality. We can’t all be perfect, but I do think there’s a lot of merit in doing the best we can – if everyone adopted this view to improve just a little bit, the world would change dramatically.
