Where should I stay on my next holiday? Google it! What time does that new restaurant open? Google it! Who can I get to do some electrical work at my house? Google it!

Google it has become the answer to almost any question you can ask, at least for the Gen Y and Xers. With internet access in almost every home and work place, and more and more on mobile phones, most of us turn to the web when we need an answer rather than relying on other mediums. So what does this mean for your business?

If you don’t have a presence on the web then chances are you are missing out to your competitor that does. Every business is different! While some can benefit greatly from an extensive website, others may only require on a static page with contact information, but I believe every business that wants to be successful should be on the web in some form or another.

Although I believe web is important I have to admit it is not the be-all and end-all. You can’t just go out and get a website, invest some money into Google Adwords and expect results. Solid branding and an integrated approach to marketing are essential. You still need to make people aware of who you are and what you offer. However, by using a website as part of your marketing mix, and making sure it ranks high in search engine results, you can be sure that when it comes time to buy Gen Y and X’ers are Googling you and actually finding a way to contact you.

Like most people my age I rely on Google almost every day for everything, from finding out opening hours of a shop, making reservations at restaurants, choosing a mechanic, to booking holidays. If you are not appearing in my search results then I can guarantee I’m not using your business.

So what sort of website should your business have? As I mentioned before, every business is different and as such their web requirements are going to be different too! It all depends on how much information you need to present, who will be using your website and of course budget! Jack in the box has recently launched a new website dedicated solely to website design and development.
